Phuncle Sam has been paying tribute to the Grateful Dead and related music for over 20 years, gradually but steadily building an audience and essentially laying the groundwork for today’s lively Grateful Dead community in Asheville NC.

There have been many memorable highlights, including backing up John Kadlecik, opening for the New Riders Of The Purple Sage with Donna Jean Godchaux and playing official after parties for Bruce Hornsby.

The Outriders deliver some of the most magical and memorable moments of the classic cosmic country outfit, The New Riders of the Purple Sage. United by their love of this timeless music, these guys pool their many years of experience to bring this music
to life in a powerfully irresistible way. Headed by the steel guitar wizard, Bill Fleming, the band also features the earthy singing and playing of Scarecrow, veteran of eighteen years of touring with the New Riders of the Purple Sage and known locally for his fine work as sound man at the legendary Salvage Station. And you’ll get a big dose of Scarekrow’s music whenever there’s a break or change of bands. Local favorites, Lee Kram, and J. d. Smith are featured as well as Darryl Cornell from the exotic land of Minnesota.
