Born and raised in Sarasota, FL Sunnie Rae has lived a life full of music. A true “Spirit” of Suwannee, this talented songwriter claims that the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park made her who she is today. Growing up attending festivals with her family and seeing inspirational Artists perform like Doc Watson, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Vassar Clemets, The McCourys and more alike would shape her into the music lover that she is. Playing around the campfires with Artist sand Musicians of all calibers would give her the confidence to become the musician that she is.
From age 8-15 Sunnie Rae took Piano lessons, learning music theory and performing in recitals and competitions. She also performed in Choir and Musical Theater all throughout her middle and highschool years. Her favorite instrument is her voice, which would lead her to the acoustic guitar and as soon as she learned her first few chords she started intertwining her poetry into songwriting.
She recorded her first album in 2013 self-titled as “Sunnie Rae; First Release.”
Her first experience in a band would be in 2014 singing in a local psychedelic blues band called Mind Zion. Writing and collaborating with friends, the band quickly broke up after the death of a band mate.
In the year 2015 she began writing and recording with Tim Ber and they would form the Folk/Grass/Americana band Free Range Strange. Traveling the country and performing nationwide with a plethora of musicians up until 2024.
Free Range Strange released two albums with some of Sunnie’s original music. “Lucky” (2015) and “Live At The Ghost Motel” (2022).
In the Year 2019, Free Range Strange started performing on the Stages at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, playing their original music at festivals Spring Reunion, Roots Revival, and Hulaween. To her it felt like everything had come full circle, sharing stages with the musicians that she looked up to the most, making guest appearances with Artist such as Donna The Buffalo, and participating in LOMAF music summer camp for kids.
These Days, Sunnie Rae is working on publishing her long lost book of poetry, honing into her songwriting and musicianship, and recording her original music. She hopes to release her next album “Heartships” in this year of 2025.
With inspirations from Artists like Gillian Welch, Molly Tuttle, Peter Rowan, John Prine, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Melanie, Joanie Mitchel, Carol King, The Avett Brothers, Donna The Buffalo, Billy Strings and many more Sunnie directs her song playing and writing towards portraying her emotions in the rawest form.
